Seasonal agricultural packing jobs in Luxembourg: sorting, packing and bottling

Agricultural packing in Luxembourg means sorting, grading, packing and labelling fruit, vegetables, potatoes or wines and crémants before they are sold, a seasonal activity tied to harvests and to strong year-end sales of local sparkling wine.

A small but steady seasonal sector

Luxembourg’s farming area is modest, and agricultural packing employs only a limited number of seasonal workers compared with neighbouring countries. Needs nonetheless arise every year on fruit, vegetable and wine farms, as well as in food logistics around the main distribution centres.

The government has extended its guidelines on seasonal farm employment to fruit growing and horticulture, a sign that these activities regularly look for extra labour during harvest and shipping peaks, particularly in autumn.

Sectors that pack produce

Orchards and market gardens sort and pack apples, pears, strawberries and vegetables. Potato growers grade and bag their crop. On the Moselle, cellars and crémant houses bottle, label and box their production for domestic and export markets.

Calendar of peak periods

Strawberries keep packers busy from May to July, apples and pears from September to November, and potatoes from late August to October. Moselle cellars face a bottling and shipping peak in November and December ahead of the festive season.

What does the work involve?

Seasonal workers sort produce by quality and size, fill punnets, crates or bags, apply labels, stack pallets and clean the line. The work is done standing, often in cold or cool rooms, at a steady pace set by the line.

Who can work in packing?

No qualification is required for most positions, which makes packing accessible to beginners. Formalities depend on nationality and age, as for any seasonal job in Luxembourg, and should be settled before the first shift.

Europeans and cross-border workers

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens work without a permit. Many packing and food logistics jobs are filled by cross-border workers from Lorraine, Wallonia or Germany, often recruited through temp agencies for assignments of a few weeks.

Non-EU nationals

A non-EU national must obtain authorisation before entering Luxembourg. For seasonal farm work longer than three months, the authorisation covers at most five months in twelve, after a labour market test carried out by ADEM.

Students and young workers

Students aged 15 to 27 can work on a student contract during holidays, for at most two months or 346 hours per year. Minors may not work at night or do overtime, which rules out some shift positions.

Pay and conditions in packing sheds

Packing is paid by the hour, at least at the unskilled social minimum wage. In temp work, pay may not be lower than that of an employee of the user company doing the same job.

Minimum pay in 2026

Since 1 June 2026, an unskilled adult packer earns at least 16.0192 euros gross per hour, or 2,771.33 euros per month full time. On a student contract, the minimum is 12.8154 euros per hour from age 18.

Hours, shifts and safety

Packing sheds sometimes run two shifts in high season. The legal week is 40 hours, with premiums for overtime. Safety shoes, gloves and warm clothing are often required, and the employer must supply the necessary protective equipment.

Occasional farm work

To ease harvests, the government announced from 2025 a harmonised scheme for occasional farm work, raising its maximum duration from 18 days to three months. Check with the employer which exact scheme your contract falls under.

Finding a packing assignment

Offers mainly come through ADEM, temp agencies and direct contact with farms. Applying a few weeks before harvest or year-end peaks helps secure a place before teams are complete and shifts are fully planned.

  1. Identify peak periods by product: strawberries, apples, potatoes or crémant.
  2. Browse the ADEM JobBoard and temp offers in sorting, logistics and food processing.
  3. Register with a Luxembourg temp agency, bringing ID and bank details.
  4. Contact orchards, market gardeners and Moselle cellars directly before the season.
  5. Check the contract: hourly rate, shift pattern, assignment length and equipment provided.
  6. If you are a non-EU national, have the employer start the ADEM and immigration procedure before you travel.

Mistakes to avoid in packing work

Short, repeated assignments expose workers to some irregular practices. The mistakes below are common among seasonal staff moving from contract to contract in the food sector and can cost wages or social coverage.

Is packing open to beginners?

Yes. Most sorting and packing positions require no experience, and short training is given on site. Speed, accuracy and the ability to stand for several hours are the qualities employers value most on the line.

Do temp agencies recruit for agriculture?

Luxembourg temp agencies mainly offer sorting, logistics and food-processing assignments, which sometimes include packing farm produce. The assignment contract must be in writing and pay at least the legal minimum.

Can packing be combined with the grape harvest?

Yes. The end of strawberries and the start of apples frame the summer, and the September harvest can precede the year-end crémant packing peak. Each contract must be separate and respect maximum working hours.

Do I need German or Luxembourgish?

Not necessarily in a packing shed, where instructions are often given in French or German depending on the farm. Understanding safety instructions is essential, and some German helps on farms close to the border.
