Which jobs do Swedish ski resorts offer?
Resorts hire lift attendants, ski instructors, rental technicians, snow groomer drivers, snowmakers, kids’ club hosts, receptionists, housekeepers, cooks, waiting staff and après-ski bartenders. Large operators also need ticket sales staff, ski patrollers and maintenance technicians throughout the winter season.
A lift attendant supervises boarding, helps children and beginners, checks passes and clears snow from the loading areas. Rental staff fit skis and boots, while slope crews prepare the snow at night, often in severe cold and long hours of darkness.
Main resorts and the season
The season usually runs from early December to late April, peaking over Christmas and during the February and March sports holidays. Further north, Riksgränsen opens mainly from February to June and offers skiing under the midnight sun at the end of the season.
| Resort | Region | Highlight |
|---|---|---|
| Åre | Jämtland | largest Swedish ski area, international feel, famous après-ski |
| Sälen | Dalarna | several family-oriented areas, many Scandinavian guests |
| Vemdalen | Härjedalen | family resorts and cross-country skiing |
| Idre Fjäll | Dalarna | integrated resort with on-site accommodation |
| Hemavan and Riksgränsen | Lapland | late season running into spring |
Who is hiring?
The leading operator, SkiStar, runs Sälen, Åre and Vemdalen among others and recruits many seasonal workers every autumn. Other employers include Idre Fjäll, independent hotels and restaurants, rental shops, ski schools and cabin rental agencies in each resort.
Useful skills
Outdoor work requires tolerance of cold and genuine ease with guests. Being able to ski is an asset for most roles and essential for instructors. Snow groomer and snowmobile drivers need the appropriate licences and training before taking a machine out.
Ski instructor: which qualification?
Swedish ski schools often train their instructors in-house before the season and also accept recognised foreign qualifications. A national instructor certificate or experience in the Alps is a real advantage. Children’s instructors are in high demand during school holidays.
EU citizens: direct hiring
Citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland can work freely in Swedish resorts. The employer requests a coordination number from Skatteverket for payroll. Nordic citizens, especially Norwegians and Danes, make up a large share of staff in resorts near the border.
Non-EU citizens: the seasonal permit covers ski resorts
The seasonal work permit expressly includes ski resorts as well as hotels and restaurants. Since 1 June 2026 it lasts up to nine months in any twelve-month period. The employer, established in Sweden, starts the application; the worker completes it and pays SEK 2,000.
A signed contract, compliant housing, comprehensive health insurance and pay at least at the full-time collective-agreement minimum are required. Working holiday agreements between Sweden and a few countries offer another route for young people aged 18 to 30.
Pay and agreements in resorts
Sweden has no statutory minimum wage. Resorts apply agreements negotiated by the employers’ organisation Visita with the HRF or Kommunal unions depending on the role. In catering, Gröna riksavtalet set a minimum of SEK 25,856 per month from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026.
For qualified work the minimum was SEK 27,279 per month. Evening, night and weekend hours earn supplements. Free staff ski passes and subsidised housing are often part of the package offered by the larger employers.
| Item | 2025-2026 benchmark | Check |

| Hotel and restaurant pay, group 2 | SEK 25,856 per month | Gröna riksavtalet |
| Qualified pay, group 1 | SEK 27,279 per month | cooks, skilled roles |

Housing and resort life
Housing is the main bottleneck in Åre and Sälen, where private rents soar in winter. Large employers have staff residences, allocated first to full-season contracts. Long dark days and deep cold call for good personal equipment and a healthy routine.
Securing a winter season step by step
- Start applying between June and September, the main recruitment period for resorts.
- Check vacancies on Platsbanken, filtering by Åre, Malung-Sälen, Berg or Älvdalen municipalities.
- Apply via the careers pages of SkiStar, Idre Fjäll and resort hotels.
- State your ski level, languages and availability from December to April.
- Get the role, hourly rate, agreement and accommodation confirmed in writing.
- Outside the EU, wait for the employer to start the seasonal permit application, then complete your part.
- Arrive for pre-season training, often in late November or early December.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying in November and hoping staff housing is still available.
- Arriving without technical clothing suited to temperatures of minus 20 degrees.
- Accepting a contract with no guaranteed hours during quiet January weeks.
- Paying an intermediary for a resort job.
- Leaving before the end of the season and losing benefits tied to a full contract.
- Ignoring the agreement and evening supplements in après-ski bars.
FAQ on ski seasons in Sweden
Below are answers to the questions seasonal workers most often ask about Swedish ski resorts. They reflect the 2026 rules and should be confirmed with the employer or the Migration Agency before you travel north.
Do I need Swedish in a resort?
Not necessarily. In Åre and Sälen English is enough for many roles, as teams and part of the clientele are international. Swedish or another Scandinavian language is still a strong advantage for reception, rentals and teaching children.
When does recruitment start?
Major operators publish vacancies from late spring and through the summer for the following season. The most popular roles with housing are often filled by September. Replacement positions can still come up until January.
Do staff get a free ski pass?
With most resort employers, yes: a free or heavily discounted season pass is part of the benefits. It may count as a taxable benefit in some cases. Check the conditions before signing the contract.
Can I follow up with a summer season in Sweden?
Yes. Many seasonal workers move from winter in the mountains to summer in coastal hotels, golf courses or parks. For non-EU citizens, the seasonal permit is limited to nine months in any twelve, which frames such combinations.
