Holiday activities in the Grand Duchy

In Luxembourg, the summer school holidays start in mid-July and end in mid-September. During these two months, municipalities, childcare services, youth associations and camp organisers run activity programmes that rely heavily on seasonal activity leaders and assistants.

Activity leaders design and run games, outings, creative and sports workshops, keep the group safe and stay in touch with parents. In tourism, they may also run campsite kids’ clubs or family entertainment during the high season.

Who employs activity leaders?

Education and care services, often called maisons relais, organise holiday activities for school-age children. Municipalities run their own programmes, and associations organise summer camps, sometimes abroad. A few campsites also hire entertainment staff for July and August.

Recruitment calendar

Applications for summer are usually submitted between February and May. All Saints, Christmas, Carnival and Easter holidays create shorter needs, often for one or two weeks. Summer camps generally last one to three weeks each.

Qualities employers look for

Employers expect responsibility, patience, creativity and the ability to manage a group. Luxembourgish is very often required to communicate with children, while French and German complete the profile in a country where children grow up multilingual.

Who can become a seasonal activity leader?

Activity leadership is very open to young people, but contact with minors brings specific requirements. Beyond nationality, employers check training, age and the absence of any record incompatible with working alongside children.

SNJ youth leader certificates

The National Youth Service (SNJ) issues assistant activity leader and activity leader certificates recognised by Luxembourg organisers. They are not always mandatory, but they make hiring much easier and allow leaders to take charge of a group. Some foreign youth-work qualifications are also valued.

Criminal record and nationality

For jobs involving children, the employer normally asks for bulletin no. 5 of the Luxembourg criminal record or an equivalent document from the country of residence. Europeans work freely, while non-EU nationals need prior authorisation.

Students and young leaders

Most seasonal activity leaders are students working on a student contract, open to those aged 15 to 27, for up to two months or 346 hours per calendar year. Non-EU students may also work freely during school holidays.

Pay and working conditions

Pay depends on status: student contract, seasonal contract or standard fixed-term contract. In residential camps, presence time, nights and meals provided are governed by rules that should be clearly stated in the contract.

How much does an activity leader earn in 2026?

On a student contract, the minimum since 1 June 2026 is 12.8154 euros gross per hour from age 18, 10.2523 euros at 17 and 9.6115 euros at 15 and 16. An adult employee on a standard contract earns at least 16.0192 euros.

Hours, nights and accommodation

In day programmes, hours follow those of the service, often between 7 am and 7 pm on a rota. In residential camps, leaders receive board and lodging, but working time and rest periods must still comply with the Labour Code.

Contract and formalities

The student contract must be written and signed at the latest when work starts, in three copies, one of which goes to the Labour and Mines Inspectorate. For minors, the legal guardian is informed in writing of risks and safety measures.

Steps to become an activity leader this summer

Activity leader positions fill early, sometimes before Easter. Recognised training, volunteer experience in scouting or youth clubs and good Luxembourgish are the strongest assets for being selected by organisers.

  1. If possible, complete an SNJ assistant leader or activity leader training course.
  2. Request bulletin no. 5 of the criminal record or its foreign equivalent.
  3. Identify holiday programmes run by municipalities, maisons relais and associations from February.
  4. Browse the ADEM JobBoard and information services for student jobs.
  5. Send a CV highlighting languages, experience with children and sports or artistic skills.
  6. Sign the written contract before day one and check hours, accommodation and pay.

Frequent mistakes in youth work

Activity leadership is a rewarding seasonal job, but it involves real responsibility towards children. The following mistakes are common among beginners and can have serious consequences for them and for the groups in their care.

Is the SNJ certificate mandatory?

It is not required for every job, but many organisers ask for it to lead a group alone or to work at a residential camp. An assistant leader certificate or solid experience with children is often enough for a first summer job.

Do I need Luxembourgish to work with children?

For programmes aimed at children attending school in Luxembourg, Luxembourgish is very often expected, since it is the main language children use with each other. Some international or tourist programmes nevertheless operate in French, German or English.

Can a foreign student work as an activity leader?

Yes. A student enrolled at a school or university abroad can sign a Luxembourg student contract if aged 15 to 27. Proof of enrolment is required, and command of local languages often decides whether the application succeeds.

Are nights at camp paid?

Rules depend on the contract and the way the camp is organised. Actual working time must be paid at least at the legal minimum, and rest periods must be respected. Always ask in writing how nights are counted.
