Seasonal activity leader jobs in France: summer camps, campsites and holiday clubs
France employs thousands of seasonal activity leaders (animateurs) every summer and winter in children's camps, leisure centres, campsites, holiday villages and clubs, on an educational engagement contract for youth stays or a seasonal fixed-term contract in tourism.

Types of seasonal animation jobs
Camp and leisure-centre leaders supervise children and teenagers: games, sports and crafts, daily routines and safety. The camp director coordinates the team, the educational plan and relations with families and the organising body throughout the stay.
In tourism, campsites, holiday villages and clubs hire kids' club leaders, sports instructors, evening entertainers and entertainment managers. The work mixes welcoming guests, shows, tournaments and aqua-aerobics, sometimes alongside reception or bar duties.
Season calendar and where you will work
Children's camps and leisure centres mainly recruit for July and August, plus shorter school holidays. Campsites open from April to September on the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts and in Brittany, with a peak in July and August.
In winter, holiday clubs and mountain villages hire children's and adult entertainers from December to April in the Alps and the Pyrenees. Summer recruitment opens in January, winter recruitment between September and November.
Who can become a seasonal activity leader?
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens work freely in France. For international clubs, English, German or Dutch is a real asset, as a large share of campsite guests come from northern Europe and expect activities in their own language.
Non-EU nationals need a permit allowing work, possibly the seasonal worker card obtained with the employer. International students holding a French student residence permit may work up to 964 hours a year without any further authorisation.
Is the BAFA certificate essential?
The BAFA, France's activity leader certificate open from age 17, is very often required in children's camps and leisure centres, where staffing ratios demand a share of qualified leaders. Campsites and clubs value it without always making it compulsory.
The BAFA is taken in three stages: a general theory session, a paid or unpaid practical placement in a camp or leisure centre, then a further specialised session, for example on water activities or young children. Many first-time leaders complete their practical placement during a summer season.
Pay: CEE or seasonal contract
In children's group stays, the educational engagement contract (CEE) sets minimum pay of €52.93 gross per day. It departs from standard working-time rules, with a cap of 48 hours a week and 80 days over twelve consecutive months.
At campsites and holiday villages, activity leaders usually sign a seasonal fixed-term contract paid at least the SMIC, €12.31 gross per hour from 1 June 2026, plus a 10% holiday allowance at the end. Accommodation and meals are often provided.
Rest, housing and meals
Under a CEE, weekly rest is at least 24 consecutive hours in each seven-day period. The usual 11-hour daily rest can be removed or reduced during stays, with compensatory rest. When continuous presence is required, the organiser covers meals and lodging.
How to get hired as an activity leader
Camp organisers and large campsite groups recruit months in advance, sometimes through group assessment days where candidates lead a short game. A clear application, verifiable references and concrete skills in at least one activity often make the difference between two otherwise similar profiles.
- Complete the BAFA general training session if you are aiming for camps and leisure centres.
- List your skills: sport, music, dance, languages, first aid and driving licence.
- Browse France Travail animation vacancies and specialist animation job sites.
- Apply to camp organisers, town halls, campsites and clubs from January.
- Prepare an example activity or evening event to present at interview.
- Check the contract type, CEE or seasonal contract, the daily or hourly pay and days off.
- Provide the requested documents, including diplomas and first-aid certificate.

Mistakes to avoid in animation jobs
The sector offers rewarding experiences, but some situations should ring alarm bells. Checking them before departure avoids ending up exhausted or underpaid in mid-season.
- Signing a CEE for a tourist campsite job, when it is reserved for youth group stays.
- Accepting "volunteer" status for paid, supervised animation work.
- Ignoring the schedule of compensatory rest set out in the contract.
- Leaving without knowing the housing terms: tent, shared room or mobile home.
- Paying a middleman for a club job in France or abroad.
Seasonal animation in France: FAQ
The answers below cover the most common situations. The public employment service and departmental youth services provide information on staffing rules for children's group stays.
Can you work as an activity leader without the BAFA?
Yes. At campsites, clubs and holiday villages, experience and skills often matter most. In children's camps and leisure centres, unqualified leaders may be hired in a limited proportion alongside BAFA holders or trainees.
How much does a camp leader earn?
The minimum is €52.93 gross per day under an educational engagement contract, regardless of hours worked. Some organisers pay more, notably for directors, health assistants and leaders specialised in higher-risk activities such as water sports or climbing.
Are campsite entertainers housed and fed?
Often, but not always. Large campsites provide a mobile home or shared room, sometimes against a deduction. These terms and evening working hours should appear in the contract or in a written document issued before arrival.
What is the minimum age?
BAFA training is open from age 17, and some organisers hire trainee leaders at that age. Campsites and holiday clubs usually set the minimum age at 18, particularly for evening entertainment roles.
