What does hotel housekeeping in Austria involve?
The housekeeping team, led by the executive housekeeper (Hausdame), services rooms for staying guests, deep-cleans rooms after departures, changes linen, restocks amenities and reports repairs. The work is physical and its pace follows guest arrival and check-out times.
Where are these jobs?
Large resort hotels in Tyrol, Salzburg province and Vorarlberg hire the most room attendants for winter. Wellness hotels, common in Styria, Upper Austria and Carinthia, also recruit staff to look after spas, saunas and pools throughout the year and in peak periods.
In summer, demand moves to the Carinthian lakes, the Salzkammergut and the Tyrolean valleys. City hotels in Vienna and Salzburg also need extra staff during the peak tourist season and the festival period, when occupancy is at its highest.
What is the calendar?
The winter season generally runs from early December to Easter, with hiring from September. Summer starts in May or June and ends in late September or October. Saturday, the traditional changeover day for guests, is usually the busiest day of the week.
What are the exact tasks?
Making beds, cleaning bathrooms and floors, emptying bins, restocking minibars and amenities, sorting linen and passing the housekeeper's inspection. Some positions include laundry work, spa cleaning or evening cleaning of public areas, depending on the size of the hotel.
Who can work in hotel housekeeping in Austria?
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can work without a permit. The job requires neither a diploma nor fluent German, which makes it accessible to many European applicants, particularly from central, eastern and southern Europe looking for a first season abroad.
What route exists for third-country nationals?
They fall under the 2026 tourism quota of 5,500 basic places plus 2,500 places reserved for Western Balkan countries. The hotel applies to the AMS for a Beschäftigungsbewilligung at the earliest six weeks before the contract begins.
The permit is valid for up to six months and can be extended to nine months within twelve. The AMS checks that no priority candidate is available, that pay respects the collective agreement and that the hotel provides or guarantees suitable accommodation.
How to become a Stammsaisonier
After at least three months of quota employment in three of the last five calendar years, a room attendant can register with the AMS. Permits are then issued outside the quota and without a labour-market test, for up to nine months per calendar year.
What about the visa?
With the AMS permit, the worker applies in person for a D visa, or a C visa for stays under 90 days, at the Austrian embassy or consulate. Work may only begin after the visa is issued, and family reunification is not possible.
How much do room attendants earn in Austria?
Since 1 October 2026, a cleaning or room attendant with under ten years of industry experience is in group 5, with a minimum of 2,096.50 euros gross a month. With more than ten years of experience, group 4 guarantees 2,153 euros.
A housekeeping supervisor may fall into group 2, at 2,440 euros in Salzburg and 2,542 euros in Upper Austria. Pro-rata 13th and 14th salaries are added, plus a one-off bonus of up to 275 euros for staff employed on 1 October 2026.
Hours and days off
The agreement is based on 40 hours a week, usually a continuous shift from morning to early afternoon, sometimes with an evening turndown service. A six-day week is only allowed if it is written into the contract, with the corresponding rest days respected.
How does staff housing work?
Most resort hotels house their teams in single or shared rooms and provide meals. Any deduction must be set in writing and stay within the official benefit-in-kind values, with no hidden charges for linen or electricity added at the end of the season.

Frequently asked questions
These answers are aimed at people considering a first housekeeping job in an Austrian hotel. The amounts are those of the hotel pay tables in force since October 2026 and do not include any extra payments a hotel may choose to offer.
Do I need German for housekeeping?
No, beginner level is usually enough because instructions are simple and teams are multilingual. A few words of German or English still help you understand the housekeeper, room sheets and guests' special requests, and make the first weeks less stressful.
How many rooms per day?
It depends on room size, the number of departures and the hotel's category. Ask about the target before signing; an unrealistic quota that forces you beyond paid hours should be reported, and any overtime must actually be paid with the supplement.
Is spa work different?
In wellness hotels, part of the team cleans saunas, pools and relaxation rooms, often in the evening. The products used require gloves and safety training, which the employer must provide during the first days of the season before you handle them.
Can I move up to supervisor?
Yes, after several seasons and with good German, a room attendant can become assistant housekeeper and then housekeeper. This means reclassification into a higher pay group, which should be confirmed in writing in the new contract.
