Daily work on the hotel floors

Room attendants clean and reset rooms after check-out or during a guest's stay: beds, bathrooms, floors and restocking amenities. Work follows a daily room sheet listing how many rooms to service and whether each is a departure or a stay-over.

Other jobs sit in the same department: floor supervisors who inspect rooms, linen and public-area attendants, and mobile-home cleaners at campsites on Saturdays, the usual changeover day for holiday rentals during the busy summer weeks.

When and where hotels recruit

In summer, demand peaks from April to September on the Riviera, in Corsica, along the Atlantic coast and in Brittany, as well as in the large campsites of Vendée and Charente-Maritime. Winter brings jobs in Alpine and Pyrenean resort hotels and residences.

Summer recruitment starts in January, winter hiring between September and November. France has around 615,000 hotel rooms, and housekeeping is among the hard-to-fill occupations highlighted by the French public employment service.

Who can apply?

EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can work in France freely. No qualification is required, making the job a common entry point for students and career changers with basic French or English, especially in large resort hotels.

Non-EU nationals need a residence permit that allows work, or an employer-requested work authorisation before arrival. For a season, the seasonal worker card covers up to six months of work a year over three years.

Pay and working conditions in 2026

Hourly pay cannot be below the SMIC, €12.31 gross from 1 June 2026, or the applicable collective agreement minimum if higher. In hotels this is usually the HCR agreement, whose pay scale starts at minimum wage level for entry grades.

Many hotels outsource housekeeping to cleaning companies covered by a different collective agreement. Either way, pay must be based on hours actually worked, never on the number of rooms cleaned, and the minimum wage always applies.

Room quotas and physical strain

Rooms-per-hour targets are common and can become excessive. The job involves bending, lifting and cleaning chemicals; employers must assess these risks, supply gloves and proper trolleys, and organise breaks throughout the shift.

Keeping a simple daily log of rooms cleaned, start and finish times helps you spot when targets push the working day beyond paid hours. Such records carry real weight if you later need to claim unpaid time from the employer.

The seasonal contract and its clauses

The seasonal contract is written, handed over within 48 hours and concluded for the season with a minimum duration. It states the job grade, hours, pay, collective agreement and probation, which is one day per week capped at two weeks.

Housing and meals

Resort and coastal hotels often provide staff rooms, free or with a deduction. Meals are provided or compensated in venues under the HCR agreement. Daily rest can be reduced to 10 hours for staff housed on site.

Finding a hotel housekeeping job: steps

Vacancies are plentiful and hiring timelines are short, sometimes only a few days before a hotel opens for the season. A methodical approach helps you compare conditions quickly, identify the real employer and steer clear of venues imposing unrealistic workloads.

  1. Choose the season, region and type of venue: hotel, residence or campsite.
  2. Prepare a CV highlighting speed, reliability, cleaning experience and dates available.
  3. Browse France Travail seasonal vacancies and specialist hospitality boards.
  4. Attend seasonal job fairs and speed-recruiting events run by France Travail.
  5. Ask about expected rooms per hour, working hours and days off.
  6. Insist on a written contract naming the actual employer, hotel or cleaning company.
  7. Check every payslip against your own record of hours worked.

Pay benchmarks and documents

These items provide a baseline for comparing offers and planning your season budget. Pay can exceed the minimum in upmarket hotels and ski resorts, and some venues add an end-of-season bonus for staff who stay until closing.

Common abuses to report

Hotel housekeeping concentrates several abuses well known to French labour inspectors, particularly among some subcontractors. Spotting them in the first days helps you react quickly, keep dated evidence and seek help from a trade union or the DREETS.

Seasonal housekeeping in France: FAQ

The following answers apply to hotels, holiday residences and campsites, whether the employer is the venue itself or a cleaning company. If in doubt, the DREETS labour law information service answers individual questions free of charge.

How many rooms per hour are expected?

There is no legal figure: targets depend on room size and cleaning type, departure or stay-over. An impossible quota can never justify pay below the SMIC or unpaid hours, so keep a note of the rooms and time spent.

Can you work without speaking French?

It is possible in some teams, but understanding safety instructions and chemical product sheets is essential. Basic French or English greatly improves your chances of being hired and of fitting into the housekeeping team.

Who is the employer when housekeeping is outsourced?

The cleaning company signs the contract, pays wages and applies its own collective agreement, even though you work inside the hotel. Check its identity, company registration number and that a pre-hiring declaration was actually filed.

Is campsite cleaning different?

Yes, work often clusters on arrival and departure days, with part-time contracts and Saturday peaks. All hours must still be declared and paid, and a string of extra contracts all summer should be avoided.
